A War Memorial

In 1919 the Mayor of the city, Sir Robert Anderson, JP, set up the War Memorial Fund. This trust was dedicated to the production of a remembrance to recognize the lives of the officers from the city who battled and kicked the bucket amid the First World War. The Memorial was raised in 1927 and remains in the Diamond. It comprises of a focal segment surmounted by a smooth figure of Peace, holding on high the shrub wreath of Victory.

The focal section is flanked by lower segments – one contains a trooper in the demonstration of taking a trench and a mariner on the deck of a boat. Four boards contain the names of the individuals who kicked the bucket. The planner of the Memorial was a Vernon March of Kent, England.
