The struggle to achieve marriage equality has been an ongoing battle for many decades now. It seemed like it wasn’t going to take this long but for so long people have been fighting against it. Even though there are so many gay people being open about their sexuality, a high percentage of straight people still thought that not allowing them to have civil rights was alright. It’s kind of strange that the majority of the people opposing marriage equality are Christians.

I’m not a very religious person but even I know that the good book asks that everyone loves one another. The discrimination by these particular Christians gives the rest a bad name. It is getting better but unfortunately we still have so far to go. It’s kind of hard to wrap your head around being gay unless you experience it first hand. This is why it makes absolutely no sense that people can disagree gays are born the way they are. Along with the struggle for marriage equality we are also currently in a civil rights battle for the transgender community. Being transgender also would require marriage equality in most situations because in most places trans “are required” to “be viewed” as their birth sex.

Finally achieving marriage equality is a huge step for humanity. This is the most progress we have made since segregation. Years from now we will look back at this struggle and wonder why it was ever even an issue, just like that. It seems as though there will always be some form of civil rights battle because people have a tenancy to involve themselves in things they don’t understand. We should all just learn to love everyone for who they are and stop trying to but in to other people’s lives. The world will be a much better place without all the hate floating around.

The fact that there are still hate crimes in the year 2015 is mind blowing. Hopefully this achievement will make these issues easier to solve moving forward.
